The Randolph Women’s tennis team successfully defended its Upper Valley Tennis Association championship on Saturday, Aug. 19, making the team the champions for the second year in a row.

The Randolph Women’s team competed all summer against teams from other towns in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. Each match consisted of three doubles matches. After playing eight rounds of regular season matches during June and July, the Randolph women were seeded second in the championship round, with a 6-2 record.

The Randolph team first faced Quechee in a quarterfinal match against Quechee and Eastman in a semifinal match, played earlier in August. In the quarterfinals, Randolph was represented by Becky Seymour, Rachel Pinard, Christy Fry, Ginny Richburg, Abbe Meiling and Nancy Reid. Randolph handily beat Quechee 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinal match against Eastman, Randolph was represented by Captain Julie Brill, Christy Fry, Becky Miller, Linda Meleady, Ginny Richburg, and Abbe Meiling. Randolph survived a very close match, two sets to one.

Those wins set the stage for the final match at the Woodstock Tennis Center Saturday. Randolph’s opponent was a team from Norwich, which had defeated Randolph in a very close 2-1 match during regular season play.

Randolph was represented by Captain Julie Brill, Christy Fry, Becky Miller, Linda Meleady, Abbe Meiling and Nancy Reid in the finals on Saturday.

The day started out well, but conditions deteriorated quickly. About an hour into play, it began to pour, and the matches were called for a rain delay. At that point, all three Randolph doubles partnerships had won their first set, and were in the middle of their second set. After a 25-minute rain delay, the players were asked to switch from hard courts to clay courts and to continue in the rain. At times it was truly pouring.

Linda Meleady, Becky Miller, Abbe Meiling, and Nancy Reid rose perfectly to the weather challenge, and finished out their matches victoriously. The final score for Linda Meleady and Becky Miller was 6-2, 7-6 (4). The final score for Abbe Meiling and Nancy Reid was 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (9).

Christy Fry and Julie Brill weren't so lucky, but they were the only ones playing with eyeglasses, and so were more hampered by the rain. Their final score was 6-3, 3-6, 0-1 (7). All three matches went to tiebreaks, and all three matches were extremely close.

The 12 women who competed on the Randolph team this year were: Captain Julie Brill, Pamela Brady, Mary Carlson, Christy Fry, Abbe Meiling, Linda Meleady, Becky Miller, Rachel Pinard, Nancy Reid, Ginny Richburg, Linda Runnion, and Becky Seymour.
