Revote in Strafford on School Budget?

A petition with about 140 signatures will be filed today with the Strafford Town Clerk, asking for a new vote on the Strafford school budget.

"It’s not just one or two people who are upset," said Margo Baldwin, who helped organize the petition drive. The budget adopted at Town Meeting was an increase of about $400,000 from last year. That 22% increase has left Strafford citizens with questions, Baldwin said.

The budget increase would require a 40-cent increase in the tax rate.

Only 40 names are needed on a petition to require a revote. The deadline for filing it is today, according to the clerk’s office.

Part of the reason for the big increase, according to the school board at the time, is the discovery of a sizeable deficit, and exploding costs for special education.

The school board plans to hold meetings to discuss the budget, especially special education costs, it was reported.
